The Sikes Disposal Pits was listed as number 32 on the National Priority List by EPA. The $120,000,000 remediation work was accomplished using an on-site incinerator on the banks of the San Jacinto River in Harris County Texas. The project was awarded the highest award for engineering excellence in Texas. It addition, it was featured as the cover story in the Engineering News Record–an internationally distributed magazine in the engineering/construction industry.
Tom served as the construction/remediation manager responsible for a team of eleven full-time on-site inspectors and administrators providing services 24/7/365 during the incineration phase. Tom managed the on-site office from site clearing through the test burn and into the remediation phase. The project was built using a EPA grant and funding from the State of Texas.
During the remediation phase the project team received EPA’s Outstanding Achievement Award for contributions to the socio-economic program and was recognized as EPA’s Prime Contractor of the Year.
